SMIT Amandla Marine manages the South African Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism's fleet of fisheries research, patrol and supply vessels, including the ice strengthened Antarctic Supply Vessel 'S.A. Agulhas'. Pursuing operational and technical efficiency, the company is required to man these vessels with suitably experienced personnel who will add value to the company's ability to manage this fleet effectively on behalf of their Client.
Responsibilities:
• Comply with the safety and environmental policies of the Company and all relevant international and national conventions, codes and legislation.
• Responsible for administration of the Engineering Department, the efficient and economic operation, repair and maintenance of all machinery and associated equipment and the upkeep of the machinery spaces and compartments used for the storage of tools, spare gear, stores, fuel, water and lubricating oil.
• Responsible for the stock of spares and stores and the timeous ordering and delivery of such items so that maintenance schedules are not affected.
• Ensure that a safe, proper and adequately manned engineering watch is maintained at all times. In the case of vessels with unmanned engine rooms, this means that all alarms and warning devices are properly maintained, monitored and acted upon.
• Compile standing instructions covering watchkeeping, safety and maintenance routines and ensure that these are readily available for the reference of his staff and that they fully understand the requirements contained therein. Copies of these instructions must be displayed at appropriate locations.
• Ensure that all the Life Saving appliances and Fire Fighting Appliances are regularly tested and maintained in good condition in accordance with SOLAS requirements. Equipment and spares are to be maintained to statutory requirements.
• Carry out such watchkeeping duties as required by the Chief Engineer (and attend the Engine Room when the engines are on "stand-by").
• Engine room watch keeping subject to the requirements of the Chief Engineer, any Company instructions and in compliance with STCW
• Monitoring of Engineer Cadet training
• Before signing off the vessel, to conduct a safety familiarization induction with his relief before handing over and ensure that the necessary “Essential Safety Familiarization Form SAF.STCW.002” has been signed off.
Requirements:
• Valid STCW95 Certificate of Competency as a Chief Engineer, Second Engineer or Engineering Officer
• Valid certificates for the following STCW’95 approved training courses:
- First Aid at Sea

Responsibilities:
As Captain, you are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel and its crew so that the desired commercial and operational objectives are achieved. You prepare the journeys and projects and you ensure the safe and efficient manoeuvring and navigation of the vessel. You command the crew, making sure they are aware of their responsibilities and are able to fulfil these responsibilities to the best of their ability. You guarantee discipline, order, cleanliness and tidiness on board in order to create a hygienic and pleasant working environment.
In addition to managing all the required administrative work, you are also responsible for maintaining contacts with third parties (e.g. customers, authorities and other agencies). You draft reports on any unsafe situations or actions in order to help increase the overall level of safety in accordance with the law and internal guidelines and procedures. In order to further improve safety, you will take part in safety exercises to ensure that the crew are able to respond adequately in emergency situations.

· Passed the appropriate technical examinations of the Maritime Training College or Council with suitable ratings all relevant subjects including Safety, Survival & Rescue, Firing-Fighting, Ship security, etc., as prescribed by the authorities

· Minimum 5-10 years of Experience in Navigation

· Knowledge of preventive maintenance of engines and various equipments fitted in the boat, and cleaning and up-keeping of the boat

· Fishing and scuba diving experience is desirable
